After waking this morning we went for breakfast at the
hotel. There was a great selection
of meats, cheeses, breads, etc., (typical European continental breakfast). By 10 AM we were off to France. If we were going directly to our destination
of Mittelwihr, France the ride would have been about one hour in duration. Gail and I chose to see more of the
Black Forest, so we took some very small winding roads through areas east of
Freiburg, Germany. As we
remembered, the small quaint towns were well worth driving through again. Not
much has changed in this area since 2007, which in our opinion was
refreshing. As we headed west to
cross the Rhine River into France, we drove through a vineyard that I had
visited when I was in the area in the fall of 2011. Most of the grapes had already been harvested, but the acres
upon acres of grape vines changing colors in the fall season were beautiful to
see. Once we crossed the Rhine
River into France, we headed north on the Alsace Wine Route toward Mittelwihr. Along the way we stopped off for some
French pastries. We bought a
couple of chocolate éclairs, which were excellent. Eventually we reached our destination, which was a small bed
& breakfast tucked away among the many grape vineyards. The B&B was a great choice; we are
spending three days here prior to heading up to Strasbourg, France. The owners of the B&B speak
excellent English and provided us with a lot of information about the area,
including restaurant suggestions.
Once we settled in and rested for a bit, we headed out to the historic
medieval village of Riquewihr.
Riquewihr is a small village known for the production of Riesling wine. It
is officially one of the most beautiful villages in France and looks today more
or less as it looked hundreds of years ago. We walked around the town for a
bit, had some wine and eventually went into an Alsacian restaurant for some
dinner and more wine. By 9:30 PM
we arrived back at our B&B for some sleep.
